Guided tour - Bucharest and earthquakes

On November 10, 2019 marks the 79th anniversary of the 1940 Vrancean earthquake, which had the highest magnitude in the 20th century (7.7 MW, at a depth of 150 km). This was a first alarm signal regarding the seismic vulnerability of the buildings in Bucharest, in particular, due to the collapse of the Carlton Block and the damage to many buildings that were mostly demolished during the earthquake of March 4, 1977. To mark this INFP moment together with MKBT will invite you to a walk of about 3 hours through the center of Bucharest, to show you and discuss the effects of the previous earthquakes, the seismic vulnerability of the present buildings (not just the red ones), the limitations and the prospects of reducing the seismic risk. Your guides will be Dragos Toma-Danila (doctor in geography, scientific researcher at INFP), Mihai Sercaianu (doctor in civil engineering, founding member of the MKBT Organization and university lecturer at the UTCB) and Alexandru Tiganescu (engineer, scientific researcher within INFP and PhD student at UTCB).

Meeting point: Market 21 December 1989 (near the fountains opposite the National Theater, near the Faculty of Geography of the UB).
Duration: maximum 3 hours.
Free organized tour.
